Figure Drawing
Figure Drawing Workshop                                       Tuesdays, 1:30 - 4:30pm                $30

In the tradition of the Italian Renaissance, this class focuses on the seeing, analyzing, and interpreting the figure in order to effectively communicate gesture and form. We work with shorter poses (2 - 20 minutes) to practice capturing the essence of the gesture, and learn how to build form on top of it. On longer poses (20 - 45 minutes) we explore strategies in depicting mass and mood using light and shadow. These are essential foundation skills for anyone pursuing representational art, regardless of your choice of subject matter. Lots of demos and hands-on instruction. $30 per session. Drop-ins welcome. Scroll down for a suggested materials list for this class.

Open Session I                     Tuesdays, 6 to 9pm                   $10

Draw from a live model - you know you need the practice! Never drawn before? Don't worry, we have a very friendly group. Already a seasoned pro? Come and inspire us. We generally start with 2 minute gesture poses, and gradually move on to longer poses. The last pose is usually about 20 minutes. As it is an open session, there is no instructor but you can pick up a lot of practical tips just by watching the others. The cost is $10 per session. Bring your own materials, come early and get a good spot! Drop-ins welcome.

Open Session II                      Saturdays, 10am to 1pm          $10

Similar to the Tuesday sessions,  (see above) but on Saturday mornings for those of you who can’t make it on Tuesday evenings. Includes some longer poses than Tuesday sessions (up to about an hour). Contact Joe for more info on the Saturday sessions. Drop-ins welcome.

Suggested Materials for Figure Drawing Workshop

Charcoal Pencils: Several soft (4B or 6B) charcoal pencils. Make sure you don't drop them, as the lead easily breaks inside the casing.

Conte: white conte chalk. One stick will last you a long, long time.

Sanguine: Basically a reddish brown pencil. Carbothello brand pencils work really well. There are many colors available, but make sure to pick out ones that are much darker than the grey of the toned pastel paper. You can get them at University Art or Art Ellis. Utrecht doesn't seem to carry them anymore.

Ppaer: A pad of drawing paper, 18 x 24 or similar size. White Drawing paper, or Newsprint works just fine.
Also, Medium grey toned Strathmore, Canson, or similar pastel paper, several sheets.

Drawing Board: Any kind will do, as long as they're not too flimsy. Make sure you have clamps or some other method of securing stacks of paper (NOT just single sheets) onto it.

Optional: You may work with other dry media on longer poses. Bring them in addition to the required materials above.
